Not everyone requires an ETA to travel to the UK. The following groups are exempt:

  • British and Irish Citizens: Holders of valid British or Irish passports do not need an ETA. Dual citizens must present their British or Irish passport or a certificate of entitlement.
  • Residents of Ireland: Non-Irish residents of Ireland from visa-exempt nationalities (e.g., US or EU nationals) don’t need an ETA when traveling to the UK from within the Common Travel Area (CTA), provided they carry proof of residence. Children under 16 are exempt from showing proof. However, an ETA is required if traveling from outside the CTA.
  • UK Immigration Status Holders: Those with a UK visa, settled/pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or permission to live, work, or study in the UK are exempt.
  • Airside Transit Passengers: Travelers transiting through UK airports without passing through border control (airside transit) are temporarily exempt from needing an ETA, though this is under review.
